This is the first title in a series on Engaging with the Church Fathers (who basically lived between the years AD100-500). Each book seeks to serve as an introductory guide to the life, writings and legacy of a Church Father or a group. They are set initially in an imaginary cafe in Cappadocia in the ancient world, where we meet and interact with the individuals. Then we explore the teaching and theology contained in their writings. Finally we return to the cafe to share what we have learned and consider how this might apply to our lives today.
In this particular book we will interact with three men, collectively referred to as The Apostolic Fathers (Clement of Rome, Ignatius of Antioch and Polycarp of Smyrna). We will also examine three other anonymous works that have come down from this period: The Didache, The Epistle of Barnabas and The Shepherd of Hermas.
All of this is part of the AncientFutureFaith project which seeks to introduce the Church Fathers & Mothers to a wider Christian audience and provide resources to help people engage with their lives and writings. The aims are to educate and inspire, and also to help forge and shape a deeper, more vibrant and informed faith for those who aspire to follow Jesus Christ authentically today.
